Beauty Notes – Health
After chatting with my friend who’s a naturopath the other day, I decided to get my scientist on and do some research about the wonder-plant Calendula. Also known as Pot Marigold, Calendula grows in sunlight all year round. My friend recommended it as it has a multitude of uses. The extracts of Calendula have anti-viral, anti-inflammatory and anti-genotoxic (meaning it wont damage cells) properties. It can be used internally and externally.
Externally, you can find creams containing Calendula to soothe bruises, minor cuts and burns, and to relieve nappy rash. Additionally, many cosmetic and skincare brands have been making Calendula a primary ingredient in their creams, lotions and oils as it really soothes and softens skin. Australian superbrand Jurlique have their own Calendula Cream, a moisturiser that is one of their top selling products. It is so nourishing (it also contains avocado, carrot, shea butter and Vitamin E) that Jurlique advises you to use it as an after-sun moisturiser.
Calendula can also be consumed internally through tea. Containing Vitamin A and C as well as other goodies, this herbal tea aids in detoxification, relieving sore throats, alleviating common colds and fevers, reducing abdominal cramps as well as combating infections and inflammation. To make this tea simply buy some of the herbs from your local organic shop, and place two teaspoons of the Calendula into a cup of boiling water and allow to steep for ten minutes. You can add a dash of honey to sweeten if it’s too bitter.
If your skin and insides are just a bit off, whether it be redness and dry patches on your body, or a common cold and cramps, Calendula should be your first step in treating the problem.

We'd love to know about it!

I recently bought a friend a cream called ’scarless’ from pure botanics in Newtown containing calendula for a post op scar and it has worked wonders on the appearance as well having a lovely soothing effect.
That’s awesome Julie-Anne!
